Discovering Hidden Gems: Day Trips Near Lake Keowee
Living by Lake Keowee is a dream, but let’s face it—post-holiday cleanup and winter blues can get real. When the walls feel like they’re closing in, and boating seems like a distant dream, what’s the remedy? A day trip! Lake Keowee located in Upstate South Carolina is an ideal location, as it is just a short day trip from idyllic towns waiting to be explored. Join me on a journey as we discover the perfect day trips from Lake Keowee, where dining, shopping, and vibes collide in the most charming way.
The Recipe for the Perfect Town
First I think it’s important to dive into what I believe makes the most perfect charming Hallmark-esq town. This is the criteria I am ranking a town on: Dining, shopping, and the vibe are the three components that make or break a small town.
Before we set off on our day trips, let’s talk about what makes a town truly charming. For me, it’s all about the trifecta: dining, shopping, and vibes. These three elements will either make or break a town.
Dining Experience
Picture a mom-and-pop restaurant with a cozy atmosphere that beckons you to stay awhile. Friendly staff, inviting ambiance, and a menu worth talking about—these are the ingredients for the perfect dining experience.
Curated Shops and Unique Finds
No charming town is complete without a shopping scene that leaves a lasting impression. Imagine strolling through streets lined with curated shops, each one telling a unique story. Regardless if it is outdoor gear or home goods or even high-end fashion, it’s not about the items—it’s about the vibe. It’s about walking into a shop and being immediately captivated by the presentation. Join me in seeking out those hidden gems that turn a shopping experience into a delightful adventure.
The Vibe…It’s EVERYTHING
Ever experienced that magical moment when you roll into a new town, park your car, and step out into the unknown? It’s that exhilarating feeling when your eyes widen, capturing the downtown’s beauty. The anticipation builds as you wonder what awaits behind each door and soak in the sidewalk’s vibe. The town’s aesthetics play a crucial role; it emits a vibe that can either draw you in with warmth or be an instant turn-off. Even if the shops are fantastic and the food is top-notch, if the atmosphere is off, everything else loses its charm.
Now that you know the three elements of an idyllic “Hallmark-esq” town let’s dive into my favorite day trips from Upstate South Carolina.
Do Not Sleep on Clayton, Georgia
Clayton, Georgia took us by surprise, and it’s a gem you definitely shouldn’t overlook. When we stumbled upon its downtown unexpectedly, I was immediately captivated and knew I had to stop and explore. Little did I know, it would become an obsession. It’s got that cool ski town vibe infused with the warmth of southern charm.
The best part? You can get from the southern tip of Lake Keowee to downtown Clayton in less than an hour. Picture an outdoor adventure meeting curated home decor – that’s the unique blend this town offers.
Here are my absolute must-stops whenever I’m back in Clayton:
- The Universal Joint: This spot is my go-to for lunch. While I’d rate the food a solid 7/8, the atmosphere is a perfect 10. It’s your spot for bar food, an excellent drink menu, and a staff that adds to the overall experience.
- Butler Galleries: Right across from The Joint, Butler Galleries stole my heart and became one of my all-time favorite shops. With booths curated by 19 different vendors, it’s a perfect blend of antiques and new items, all displayed with utmost charm.
- Wander: No trip to Clay is complete without a visit to the “Wander Shop.” Locally owned and boasting two stories filled with outdoor gadgets, apparel, books, toys, and more – If you enjoy nature and outdoor adventures do not skip on this shop. Plus the staff is the best.
- Reeves Ace Hardware – No, that isn’t a typo! This Ace Hardware is like nothing you have ever seen. It’s not your typical hardware store; it’s a sprawling wonderland that seems to occupy an entire block. From apparel to home goods, kitchen gadgets to Christmas decor, this Ace Hardware has it all.
Cashiers, NC – So Close!
Once I realized this cute “Hallmark-esq” town is only a 45-minute drive from the southern end of Lake Keowee I knew I had to go and explore it. Eager to explore we might have arrived a tad bit too early, catching the town before it fully awakened.
We decided to go explore the scenery while we were waiting for the shops to open… and it did not disappoint. Cashiers isn’t your typical downtown kind of place; instead, it offers cute little pockets of shops waiting to be uncovered. Sure, you’ll need to hop in your car to explore them, but trust me, it’s worth it. Besides, the views are nothing short of spectacular. And did I mention there’s a ski mountain nearby? Granted, it’s not the Adirondacks, but it’s a cool sight in North Carolina.
After our adventure to see the sights, we stopped at this second-hand furniture shop, The Bazar Barn. First, they had so many gems, and I overheard that it is a charity where the items are donated and the proceeds go back to the community. I can’t wait to go back and visit, and this time bring my husband’s truck (IFYKYK).
We ended our afternoon at the Whiteside Brewing. We ended up arriving here around 12:45 and I swear the entire town was here. Initially, Cashiers appeared a bit sleepy, but it turns out the winter awakening happens around noon. Despite the wait that stretched out the door, Whiteside Brewing was a solid 10 out of 10. The atmosphere was a blast, the food scored a solid 8, and the beers were great The grounds are stunning, and I’m already planning a return trip, especially in the summer when there’s even more to explore. Clearly, this place is a local favorite – it was buzzing with energy!
Highlands, North Carolina
The Highlands is just about an hour drive from the southern end of Lake Keowee,a windy but absolutely stunning drive through the mountains… BUT OH MY! This is the definition of a Hallmark town, that has quickly captured my heart (and secretly sparked my desire for a vacation home here).
From the moment you arrive, even before stepping out of your car, Highlands screams irresistible charm. Picturesque streets adorned with breathtaking buildings, seamlessly blending Southern charm with a rustic mountain ambiance.
A notable presence in the town is the Old Edwards Inn, which owns a significant portion of the surrounding downtown property. The anticipation of touring this inn is real – the buildings radiate an atmosphere of high-end perfection and luxury but are also inviting and welcoming. My personal favorite store, Acorns, is owned by the Inn and is an absolute gem. With its beautiful home decor and picture-perfect clothing, I am utterly obsessed.
For lunch, we ventured to the Ugly Dog, and I can confidently recommend it, even if just to immerse yourself in the plethora of dog photos adorning the walls. It’s a delightful spot for a leisurely lunch, surrounded by canine charm and bonus points kid-friendly.
Highlands embraces an “upscale” feel, largely due to the abundance of high-end boutiques exuding major Southern inspiration. If you’re a fan of strolling through boutiques and indulging in a bit of “window” shopping, this destination is a must-visit. And the best part? It’s just a day trip away from the beautiful shores of Lake Keowee!
Living by Lake Keowee offers a dreamlike escape, but when the winter blues hit, the remedy lies in day trips to charming towns just a short drive away. Upstate South Carolina becomes the perfect gateway to explore idyllic places where dining, shopping, and vibes create unforgettable experiences. Whether it’s the cool ski-town vibe of Clayton, the picturesque charm of Cashiers, or the upscale allure of Highlands, each destination paints a unique story. Dining in quaint restaurants, exploring curated shops, and soaking in the town’s distinctive vibe are the keys to a perfect day trip. Lake Keowee, with its proximity to these hidden gems, turns ordinary days into extraordinary adventures. Do you have a favorite town you like to visit?
