Lakehouse Moody Green Primary Bedroom: DIY
“Get your life together,” my mom said on a Facetime call when she grabbed a glimpse of our sad bedroom. I was folding laundry when she had a full view of our chaotic mess for a primary bedroom – unpainted walls, laundry piles, and mismatched furniture.
I’m not exactly sure what makes hearing from your mom different, but instead of feeling defeated, her words sparked a fire in me. This conversation kicked off a spontaneous journey to revamp our bleak, ugly primary bedroom, with a vision of creating a serene, lakehouse-inspired retreat that reflects our personality and style.
Primary Bedroom DIY Starts with Pinterest!
The transformation journey began with a quick dive into Pinterest for inspiration and seeking advice on Instagram. Armed with ideas and determination, I wasted no time. By 8:30 PM, I found myself at Lowe’s, purchasing paint for our bedroom walls.
Choosing the perfect color was crucial. I opted for a moody dark green shade called “Cottage Grove” by Magnolia Homes, envisioning a cozy Adirondack-inspired space. Despite the room’s modest size and awkward layout, its slight view of the lake served as inspiration for our lakehouse theme.
I am so inspired by the Women DIYers on Instagram and wish I was able to independently complete these projects. But the truth is, I am still an apprentice. So with my husband Ryan’s help, I dove straight in. This project was the first time I used the chop saw and learned how to create mitered corners. Y’all I still can’t believe I made the accent wall. I just love it!
Furnishing a Primary Lakehouse Bedroom
Finding the right furniture was a challenge, given our space constraints. We opted for a king-size bed frame, a long dresser, and a single nightstand from our local furniture store. Additional accent pieces, like fish prints and a quirky acorn lamp, were discovered at my favorite boutique shop (MJ Son Tannery), adding personality to the space.
Amazon came to the rescue when I was searching for an area rug and curtains. Y’all this rug is SOOOO soft! It was the best find, and truthfully my favorite rug in the entire house. When it came to the curtains, I wanted a plaid, but not a heavy plaid. I needed a color to help breakup all the dark moodiness of the walls. And I think they are PERFECT!
Timeline for a Moody Green Primary Bedroom DIY
However, this renovation journey was not without its challenges. Balancing full-time careers, parenting, and DIY projects required careful planning and dedication. These projects are taking WAY longer then I hoped for. BUT I need to realize that Instagram is a highlight reel and just because it appears that a DIYer is finishing everything in a week… who knows the reality.
Phase one of this project, just looking at the primary bedroom space (and not the washroom or closet area) took 4 weekends.
Budget For a Primary Bedroom DIY
I want to be fully transparent, it is so easy to look at social media and have no clue the cost of what it takes to tackle a project. So I am always going to share what we spend on them. It doesn’t mean you couldn’t spend more or less, but perhaps gives you an insight.
My initial goal was to keep it to a $5,000 project, including all accessories and furniture. And I failed. Here is a high-level breakdown. Wood ($586 ) and paint ($100) were purchased from lowes. Furniture was bought from our local furniture shop, Shipleys ($3,740), accessories ($452), and decorations ($240).
I do love that we were able to purchase the furniture and a majority of the decorations from local shops. Whenever possible I love to support local. The fish frames, lamp, and fishing basket were all secured at M . Tannery and Sons (my FAVORITE shop in Seneca SC).
But the Green Primary Bedroom isn’t Complete, yet!
While our primary bedroom has had the most beautiful remodel, it’s only the beginning for this entire space. We have big plans for the washroom and closet. Transforming this house into a home is such a priority for me. It is so important to truly LOVE where you call home…. And we are committed to doing that, one project at a time.
Now, I must know would you ever paint your primary bedroom this dar moody green?
