Lake House Decorating Ideas on a Budget: Create a Lakehouse Tablescape
Decorating a lake house can be a fun yet daunting task, especially when you’re on a budget. But here’s the good news: you don’t need a huge budget to transform your space. One of my favorite ways to add character and warmth to any room is by decorating the table. Whether it’s an entryway table, end table, or my personal favorite—the dining table—adding a little decor can make all the difference. Now, I’m not one for minimalism. I love a super-curated moment (think Kiel James Patrick or Steffy – both my favorite Instagrammers)
But that doesn’t mean you have to spend an arm and a leg to get the look you want. The key is to build your collection over time, not all at once. Here’s my process for creating a beautiful tablescape in our lake house, while keeping costs low.
Shop Your Home First: When Decorating Your Lakehouse
Before you head out to buy new decor, start by shopping your home. You’d be surprised at what you have collected over the years, even if your style has evolved.
I always recommend this step because it’s free and helps you rediscover forgotten treasures. Look for items that fit the theme or color palette you’re aiming for and then arrange them on your table. Don’t overthink it, just play!
Setting the Table Will Transform Your Space
If there’s one space that can instantly transform a room it’s the dining table. Setting the table is the fastest way to make your lake house feel warm and inviting. I love a good tablescape, and I believe the more curated and busy, the better. Mix patterns, add height and dimension, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors and themes.
Mix and Match
Summer is full of patriotic holidays, but that doesn’t mean you have to cover your table with American flags. Since I’m not a fan of a lot of blue, I took a different approach to my 4th of July tablescape. I focused on reds, but not Christmas reds. Instead, I used a variety of shades to create a subtle patriotic theme without it being too in-your-face.
Adding Lake-Themed Elements
Since my dining table overlooks the lake, I wanted to incorporate elements that reflected the beautiful view and also reflected our family’s personality. I adore ducks, so they had to be part of the tablescape. My husband likes to call himself a fisherman, so I added fun fishing trinkets to the tablescape. The fishing bobbers are my favorite fun accessory that keeps the lake theme going all while adding a bit of pop and a conversation piece. This is where I encourage you to have fun and personalize your table to fit your style and personality.
Shop Smart
While I encourage you to shop your home, it’s also okay to pick up a few new items to complete your look. I found some affordable trinkets at Hobby Lobby to give my centerpiece a fuller feel. These little additions can make a big impact without breaking the bank.
Another favorite place to explore is local thrift shops or second-hand stores. My favorite curated shop is the Tannery. I always go there first when looking for a unique element for my home. Don’t forget Facebook Marketplace because so many cool treasures can be found for reasonable prices!
Embrace Creativity
When it comes to creating a lakehouse tablescape, throw out the rules and do what makes your heart happy. Don’t worry about being too matchy-matchy. Mix patterns, play with height, and add personal touches. The goal is to create a space that feels warm, inviting, and uniquely yours.
Decorating a lake house on a budget doesn’t have to be stressful. By shopping your home, setting your dining table, and adding personal touches, you can create a stunning space that reflects your style. So, grab your favorite items, experiment with different layouts, and let your creativity flow. Your lake house will thank you for it!
