Hiking Waterfalls Near Lake Keowee
We have spent a good part of this summer knee-deep in renovations, and when we have pulled ourselves away from the chaos of home renovations it’s been for quick boat trips out on Lake Keowee. Truth is we have done barely any hiking this season (maybe because it’s been a hot summer). Anyhow, we were determined to change that this past weekend.
Ryan discovered two new waterfalls for us to explore that were a quick 45-minute drive from the southern end of Lake Keowee, Spoonauger & King Creek Falls.
If you love to explore waterfalls near Lake Keowee or want an easy hike or great picnic spot: Spoonauger Falls and King Creek Falls are an awesome adventure. Bonus you can visit both from the same trailhead. These South Carolina Waterfall hikes are perfect for a quick hike, a family outing, or just a peaceful picnic.
Spoonauger Falls: A Perfect Spot to Dip Your Toes
First up, Spoonauger Falls. This was the ideal spot for our family, especially since our little Frenchie, who’s not a fan of long hikes, was able to join us. The hike to Spoonauger Falls is short and sweet—just a 20-minute stroll that even the youngest or oldest in your group can handle with ease. The waterfall itself is a stunning 50-foot cascade that tumbles down a rock face, surrounded by lush rhododendrons. On a hot day, there’s nothing better than dipping your toes in the cool water at the base of the falls. It’s a refreshing treat after the hike and the perfect place to relax and enjoy a picnic.
Trail Description:
- Difficulty: Easy
- Distance: 0.25 miles to the Spoonauger Falls Trail, then a short 0.2-mile hike to the falls
- Highlights: Easy for all ages, dog-friendly, cool water for a quick splash
King Creek Falls: A Picture-Perfect Destination
After a quick lunch, we headed down the gravel road to the King Creek Falls Trailhead- No need to move your car! Bonus!
This waterfall is a bit taller, standing at 70 feet, and while you can’t splash around at the base, the view is absolutely worth the visit. The trail is a little steeper in parts, but nothing too challenging, and the journey is just as beautiful as the destination. We spotted a few smaller falls along the way, and the sound of rushing water made the whole experience
Trail Description:
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Distance: 0.6 miles round trip
- Highlights: Scenic hike, stunning waterfall, peaceful atmosphere
