Upstate South Carolina is full of opportunities to adventure in the outdoors (truth is, it’s why we moved here without ever visiting), there are so many hiking opportunities with various difficulties—making it an ideal place for both families and those who like more of an adventure challenge. Table Rock stands out as a must-visit destination for those seeking a memorable outdoor adventure with their loved ones.
Table Rock is located in Pickens, SC, amid the Blue Ridge Mountains. Table Rock State Park is GORGEOUS, comprised of two lakes, multiple hiking trails, camping opportunities, and more. Making it an ideal destination for family hiking excursions and outdoor exploration. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a novice explorer, there are trails suited to every skill level, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the beauty of this natural wonder.
Table Rock State Park: A Hike With A View
At the heart of Table Rock State Park lies the iconic Table Rock Mountain, a majestic granite dome that towers over the surrounding landscape. Hiking to the summit of Table Rock offers breathtaking panoramic views of the rolling hills and valleys below, making it a rewarding challenge for adventurous families. While this hike is absolutely worth the effort, note it is a challenge for all age levels.
The Table Rock trail stretches approximately 3.6 miles each way and is no leisurely hike. My kids (ages 8 and 11) were able to conquer this mountain, I would be lying if I said it was easy. This mountain features rocky terrain and steep climbs. While the hike may pose a challenge, the sense of accomplishment and the breathtaking views at the summit make it well worth the effort.
Table Rock State Park, A Hike for Everyone
The Table Rock State Park doesn’t just cater to those looking for a challenge by climbing Table Rock Mountain, it truly caters to everyone at various skill levels. This is just one of the reasons why I love hiking in Upstate South Carolina. There is an abundance of trails catering to various skill levels.
Families with young children or beginners may prefer exploring the park’s shorter and easier trails, such as the Carrick Creek Trail or the Lakeside Trail. These gentle paths wind through the forest, alongside streams, and offer opportunities for wildlife spotting, providing a memorable experience for hikers of all ages.
Tips for Hiking with Kids
Hiking with kids can be a rewarding experience. But if we are also honest, it can test our patience that is why being prepared is crucial to having a great experience. After having the opportunity to hike various terrain and cover hundreds of miles with my kudos here are my tried and true tips to help make the experience as positive as possible so it is an enjoyable family adventure for all:
1. Bring Snacks (and More Snacks): Packing a variety of snacks is essential to keep energy levels up and prevent meltdowns along the trail. I like to spruce it up and bring things we don’t normally eat at home such as trail mix. But we also bring a few of our tried and true fruit, peanut butter sandwiches, and goldfish crackers.
2. Take It Slow: Don’t rush the hike; instead, enjoy the journey and be open to taking breaks as needed. Go into the hike without a time frame in mind- nothing is worse than getting frustrated because you aren’t moving at a predetermined pace. I learned a while ago, that if I go into without time constraints embrace breaks, and encourage exploring the surroundings everyone walks out happier.
3. Kid Photographers: Kids love being involved, so let them capture the memories by allowing them to take photos along the trail. Not only does this keep them engaged, but it also creates lasting mementos of your family adventure.
4. Foster Conversation: Use hiking as an opportunity to connect with your children. Engage them in fun conversations, play games, or share stories as you traverse the trail. It’s a fantastic way to bond and create lasting memories together.
5. Be Prepared: Ensure everyone is equipped with appropriate footwear, comfortable clothing, and adequate supplies, including water, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit. Being prepared helps alleviate stress and ensures a safer and more enjoyable hiking experience for the whole family.
