Discover the Vibes of Living on Lake Keowee, South Carolina
Do you believe that the ambiance of a town can make or break your experience? The vibe of the lake town should align with the experience you desire. When I was on the hunt for a lakehouse I scoured every lake south of Virginia, seeking more than just factual town outlines. But I couldn’t find a post that would be more than just an outline of the facts about the town. I wanted to know the vibe, and what to expect… This article dives into not only the facts of Lake Keowee but also its unique charm.
Upstate South Carolina- A Lake Heaven
I must admit, I never heard of Lake Keowee until I was on the hunt for a perfect lake town. So in case you are like me and have no idea where Lake Keowee is: Picture the western corner of South Carolina not too far from Georgia or North Carolina and at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lake Keowee is part of the region known as “Upstate South Carolina.”
Upstate South Carolina is actually known for 3 lakes, Lake Jacose, Lake Hartwell, and Lake Keowee. Lake Keowee is situated between Lake Jacosse and Lake Hartwell. Each of these lakes has unique features but Lake Keowee stands out as a gem of the region. Lake Keowee captivates both residents and vacationers with its unique southern charm attracting both adventure seekers and those looking for a relaxing day out on the water.
Lake Keowee Demographics- Beyond the Beauty
Lake Keowee is 26 miles long and 3 miles at the widest point, there are 71 islands on the lake with approximately 300 miles of shoreline.
AKA It is a big and beautiful southern lake full of recreation opportunities.
At the southern end of the lake, you are near the towns of Walhalla, Seneca, and Clemson. This end of the lake is the most populated (but don’t get that twisted, it is still full of small-town charm). This is where you will find a mix of big box stores and unique downtowns (more on that soon). If being able to stop at a store, or go out to a restaurant is a priority being at the southern end brings you closer to these convinences.
Heading north, the feel becomes more “rural” embracing the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The northern end of the lake is comprised of the towns: Pickens and Salem, with Six Mile located near the middle of the lake.
It’s Not just the Water or the Mountains
Lake Keowee is a vast open lake with stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. The northwest end of the lake features a spectacular cove known as “Party Cove,” complete with a gorgeous waterfall. You can view the waterfall from your boat, or if you are more adventurous you can drop an anchor and hike around the falls.
It’s important to understand before you go to Party Cove, that it is a popular spot (probably why it has the nickname of “Party Cove”) which often means heavy boat traffic in this area. And as the name implies, it is often full of boaters having a good time with loud music and a few adult beverages. I don’t want this to deter you from going, but rather manage your expectations for when you arrive. In fact, I highly recommend “seeing it” to cross it off the bucket list- But just know there are more relaxing, and peaceful places to hangout on the lake.
In addition to the beautiful natural scenery that makes up the vibe of Lake Keowee one of my other favorite pastimes is to go “house hunting.” Y’all I think I missed my calling, I should have been a realtor because I LOVE looking at homes. And the homes on Lake Keowee do not disappoint. The lake is full of multi-million dollar mansions that are beautifully curated with the best outdoor setup. I hope one day to have an opportunity to explore the inside of the houses too.
The Southern end of the lake has a castle that is currently being remodeled. It is a sight to see for sure. And if you are exploring the Northern end, the Cliffs is a luxury community comprised of jaw-dropping homes lakeside homes.
A Lake Designed for Fun
Lake Keowee isn’t just beautiful, it’s a playground for water enthusiasts. Boating, fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are just a few of the activities that draw adventure seekers to its shores. The water is this mesmerizing clear blue/green color. I feel weird saying the water has this green color to it, but it does and it isn’t weird or “gross” fact it’s quite the opposite. Lake Keowee is known for having beautiful water making it beyond inviting to jump in and swim. Tubbing, skiing, and wakeboarding are rather popular on the lake. But the truth is, the lake very rarely has felt crowded (which I can’t say for lakes that we have explored in Upstate NY).
We have the privilege of living right on the lake, and it isn’t uncommon for us to see kayakers, and fishermen all year round. While I am not going to pretend Lake Keowee is a warm lake in the heart of winter BUT, your recreation opportunities don’t need to stop just because the temperatures have dropped.
Unique Hideaways
What makes Lake Keowee unique is the number of coves or “hideaways” this lake has. Recently, I heard the lake described as a giant Christmas Tree with each branch leading to a cove. Now I don’t know if I would classify it the same way, but it certainly is true that this lake is full of unique coves.
The coves are worth exploring, especially by canoe or kayak. I have had amazing wildlife sightings when canoeing down a cove. When exploring the coves you will notice these unique, slightly random birdhouses. When we are out paddling we find it fun to see how many birdhouses we can spot on our adventures. Typically the birdhouses are placed at the end of the cove. My guess is, it signifies that you can’t travel any further on the water, but I don’t truly know.
Lakeside Eateries
I LOVE to go out to eat, and it is extra special when you can adventure to a restaurant via boat…. Unfortunately… this is where Lake Keowee has room for improvement. Lake Keowee is a large lake covering a lot of miles, but there are only two restaurants that are accessible by boat.
The Light House is in the town of Seneca. We have visited this restaurant a few times, one of them being by boat. I don’t recall having a hard time trying to dock, as there were plenty of spots (but this could also have been the time of year we went). But it is important to know that you have to walk up a decent-sized hill to get from the dock to the restaurant. If walking is any bit of a concern, I would skip visiting by boat. The Lighthouse has both indoor seating in the traditional restaurant that is more on the “fancier side” and also a bar outside.
We wanted to stop at the bar for a drink before we went into the restaurant but you have to be over 21 to walk in (and we had our kidos with us). Honestly, I was a bit surprised as it is just an outdoor quick bite/sports bar atmosphere. Anyhow, I will share more of a full review of this restaurant at a later time because it certainly is a staple of the community and one worth visiting.
The only other restaurant accessible by boat is the Tiki Hut- We have attempted to visit this restaurant multiple times. However, due to its popularity, we have never been able to secure a spot at the dock. From what I hear it’s a fun atmosphere great for a summer drink, and the food is ehhh. (bar food, manage your expectations and you will love it). The Tiki Hut is located next to the Keowee Marina in Seneca and is only open during the summer (which is a total bummer as we have a long boating season here).
In all fairness, this isn’t a lake with a ton of dining options, but maybe that’s for the best. Pack a picnic there are tons of islands to explore that would make a great stop for lunch.
